Species observed in local watersheds.

This is the entry page into lists of species. Eventually it will list data for all types of organisms observed in the Dufferin watersheds as well as pictures where available. The principal data bases are maintained by Don Hayward. Complete data, including exact location of observation, habitat etc., are available upon request. Please note that scientific names may not match those from other reference sources. Corrections and suggestions are always welcome.
We solicit contributions to these species lists.
Anyone wishing to add observations of plants, animals, birds, insects etc is encouraged to contact Don Hayward. Access this outline form to see what information is requested.
If you do not live in the upper watershed area (Dufferin County or near its borders) we urge you to begin your own list.
Everyone is encouraged to browse through the section on suggested projects. This is a short
list of projects that are now active or ones that individuals and groups could initiate.

DUFFERIN COUNTY

Dufferin County is located in southern Ontario, Canada, about 100 Km north-west of Toronto. The geographic centre is approximately 80o 10' W; 44o 5' N. Maximum elevation of the county is 540 meters above sea level, making this the highest point in southern Ontario.
The headwaters of five river systems are located within the county. As well, this is the main recharge area for most of the major aquifers in south central Ontario.
The county lies on top of the Niagara escarpment and about 45 Km of this feature pass through the eastern part of Dufferin. The economic base has been traditionally agriculture. Significant and expanding light industrial activity is found in the towns of Orangeville and Shelburne. A large and growing part of the population is made up of residents who commute to jobs outside the area.
